Vintage Vibes

The charging warrior within me can happily adapt to a day of gingham and cupcakes. So when the sun shines on a Sunday, I escape from being a home-building domestic god and explore the neighbourhood flea markets and antique stalls.

(This is my first proper post using the new WordPress Mosaic tile gallery function and it works like a dream… even on my iPad! Suddenly I’m a style magazine.)

Sunday

Grave ChorltonThis is another shot from my Chorlton photo diary. We wandered round the village on Sunday, pretending it’s spring and loving the winter sun because it’s Britain and we all know this might actually count as summer this year. It’s so close to the city, yet it feels like the country. I’m beginning to lose my urban headache and feel the peace settling around me.

50 Shades of Lentil

Chorlton diary

Finally got round to exploring my new neighbourhood. Wore my ‘fur’ to the Unicorn vegetarian whole food store… got some looks. Oops. They have 50 different types of lentil… Found a trippy little 70s boutique and thought I was in San Francisco for a minute. Sundried bananas and beetroot juice for lunch! Totally hippy. Chorltonville looks more like the Cheshire stockbroker belt than Manchester…

Quentin Crisp

Quentin Crisp by Mark Kennedy

Quentin Crisp Mosaic by Mark Kennedy

Remembering the great man, who died in Chorlton, Manchester, thirteen years ago to the day. Crisp was fearless and independent, and lived life exactly as he wished, with wit as his only weapon against a stark and intolerant world. Feted by Warhol and played by John Hurt (and serenaded by Sting but we’ll gloss over that – Gina X’s No GDM trumps An Englishman in New York any day) Denis Charles Pratt, as he was christened, remains an inspiration to us all with his defiant, self-serving individualism. A man who refused to acknowledge gender or convention, he was the ultimate free spirit.

Mr. Crisp has been immortalised by Manchester artists Mark Kennedy and Stewy. The Naked Civil Servant has finally arrived in Manchester’s Gay Village – let’s hope he decides to stay.
