Cosmic Jukebox

Exclusive! The Flaming Lips remixed.

It Overtakes Me The Flaming Lips Slow Lane mix CoverIt Overtakes Me – The Flaming lips (Slow Lane Mix)

It’s a huge cosmic sigh, the sound of a man staring into space trying to make sense of it all, and also the sound of me in the bath (stop laughing please, this is serious) imagining new layers to a stark track which needed some starlight. Originally the second half of the single It Overtakes Me, which you may remember from the famous beer commercial (Beck’s 4-Step), The Stars are so Big…I am so Small…Do I Stand a Chance? was the celestial second act which contrasted so much with it’s brother. I took the acoustic guitar from the end and built the whole track around it, taking samples of vocal and making them echo in the style of 10cc’s I’m Not in Love. I also played the flute over most of the song, resulting in richer, warmer layers of sound. As far as I know, I’m the only person to remix this track.

Taken from The Cosmic Jukebox, my remixes, mashups and original music.

Make me Beauty Fool

photoshopped model

This video by Jesse Rosten really kicks the beauty industry in the rubber parts, spelling it out in plain old pixels. With the right software you can digitally revise just about anything. It seems to be quite a serious issue, giving people impossible standards of beauty, but when you get to ‘adjust your race’ you really start to worry. I’d just like to say I’ve never used Photoshop – sorry Fotoshop to make anyone look better. But I might have used it to make them look worse!

Pause the video at 1:00 to compare the model with the image above, which I Photoshopped heavily. Couldn’t resist it. Sorry.

Instant Karma

golden buddha head and shoulders

“The world is so loud. Keep falling. I’ll find you.”

This mantra, hypnotic and beautiful is from Snowflake by Kate Bush. It’s repeated with glacial poise and it came to mind while taking these photographs. My travels around the WordPress Topics page have shown me some wonderful things, but also some shocking hate-filled blogs. From Cross people, as I call them – if you know what I mean? So I thought I’d post these pictures to restore a little karma. Happy New Year!

Black and white can add real drama and depth to a picture…

I just got a new app for my iPhone, and decided to experiment on my little Buddha. My kitchen work top served as a studio, with All Saints wrapping paper as a backdrop and a shaving mirror as an accent light reflector.

Deciding which filter to use can be really difficult when you like all of them. I love the washed out inky blacks in this one.

Air – Return Journey to the Moon

air french band le voyage dans la lune

Air, the iconic French band, travel back in time to 1902 for a return visit to the moon. They hit the big time with modern classic Moon Safari in 1998, and this time they’re soundtracking one of the first big silent movies from the dawn of cinema. As bright and playful as the movie itself, it looks like Dunckel and Godin have distilled their style into a kind of Telstar-flavoured psychedelic prog-rock.

“It’s not something boring from a museum – it’s alive!” says Nicolas Godin, of their new project which has inspired a full album, released on February 7, 2012.

New from Goldfrapp

female pop star

Alison Goldfrapp

Big things are ready to roll for Goldfrapp this year, with Melancholy Sky lighting the fuse this week and a Singles Compilation to follow in February. Currently working on a new album, which I have a sneaking suspicion will echo the best of Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree, Goldfrapp found time to slip this remix of Strict Machine through Pete Tong’s letterbox. More launch pad than rocket, it’s a bouncy mix, with stripped back vocals, aching with cool and probably their most credible visit to the dance floor yet.

Strict Machine (Jamie Jones mix)

Melancholy Sky (with a cool fan-made video to go with it)

Also released as a teaser, the sublime slow burner Yellow Halo complete with dreamy video

Check out my Vibe-O-scope to hear the original version of Strict Machine, complete with freaky video

More wonderful electric Goldfrapp goodies here, including some of my exclusive remixes.
