New from Goldfrapp

female pop star

Alison Goldfrapp

Big things are ready to roll for Goldfrapp this year, with Melancholy Sky lighting the fuse this week and a Singles Compilation to follow in February. Currently working on a new album, which I have a sneaking suspicion will echo the best of Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree, Goldfrapp found time to slip this remix of Strict Machine through Pete Tong’s letterbox. More launch pad than rocket, it’s a bouncy mix, with stripped back vocals, aching with cool and probably their most credible visit to the dance floor yet.

Melancholy Sky (with a cool fan-made video to go with it)

Also released as a teaser, the sublime slow burner Yellow Halo complete with dreamy video

Kate Bush – 50 Words For Snow

Kate Bush

The reviews are in and they’re saying it’s her masterpiece. As the new album rolls out, Kate Bush is teasing us with magical imagery, creating a multimedia concept album which can only be the result of having your own record label. The album is out today, http://www.katebush.com/50-words-snow-pre-order

Check out my Vibe-O-scope: Video Curios

kaleidoscope fractal

This is my slightly random video chart of great tunes and freaky videos. See Grace Jones stretched into something very alien or just groove with Blondie. From Lemon Jelly’s demonic kaleidoscope to Goldfrapp’s bizarre animations, it’s a trip.

Halloween Horror

“When the torches came back on there were real screams…”

Darkroom iMovie Poster

They say that Catholics were chased into the tunnels beneath Manchester and murdered, hundreds of years ago. Last Halloween, we went on a tour of the tunnels under the city centre, which turned into a kind of grown up ghost train…

We experienced total darkness when we all turned our torches off, because there is no light down there. At this point, in a vast cave with a vaulted ceiling, we were encouraged to engage in a round of primal screaming. The effect was chilling, followed by a lot of nervous laughter. When the torches came back on there were real screams: someone had stumbled over a human skeleton, and further along in an air raid tunnel, what appeared to be a half-rotten corpse was slumped against a wall. In the darkness and confusion, it took a few moments to work out that these were dummies, courtesy of someone’s twisted sense of fun. We kept telling ourselves that as we shone our trembling torches over walls adorned with ancient head-counts from the second world war and strict Victorian posters.

Families sheltered here, shielding their children from German bombs. In Victorian times, immigrant workers were forced to live in the dark, dripping caverns. On the walls you can see ancient graffiti, the cave paintings of recent history. Fascinating, frightening and fun at the same time. Give the tour a go: if you’re curious about the strata of a city built in layers on top of itself, or if you crave sensory deprivation and a change of trousers.

Watch the movie if you dare! 1min30seconds with flashing images…

This clip was made with an iMovie trailer-template.

The Candle-Lit Vigil Against Hate Crime

It’s that time of year again. The days grow shorter and chill winds blow through the streets of London. On the last weekend in October, Trafalgar Square is illuminated with a blanket of candle-light as people flock in their thousands to remember the victims of hate crimes. To see so many people united against violence is a spiritual experience in the truest sense. Last year, as the choir sang, flames sparked into life across the square. I stood in silence in a sea of flickering points of light, moved by the open displays of emotion around me. Standing right before me was the net result – the actual aftermath of hatred: sadness and loss. To be amongst so much catharsis was ultimately uplifting, and I felt fortified by the solidarity of the people around me. Various speakers roused us with spirited speeches, and celebrities and prominent members of the Police and Parliament publicly voiced their support. Ultimately, it became a celebration of the human spirit, of defiance and dignity.

This year the vigil takes place on Friday 28th October 2011 in Trafalgar Square. For more information check the links below.
